Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart fails to effectively pump the blood to the brain and all other vital organs of the body. Or in other words, a sudden cardiac arrest happens when the heart stops functioning immediately. It is an emergency medical situation where the victim has to be treated immediately or else may result in the loss of his or her life. During a sudden cardiac arrest, the victim first loses his or her pulse, then consciousness and finally the breathe. All these symptoms will be shown in a matter of seconds.

Previous instances of sudden cardiac arrest cases suggests that, if not treated immediately, ninety-five percent of them die within minutes of its occurrence. However, with fast appropriate medical treatment, the victim could be saved. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is an effective piece of equipment used for this purpose, where the victim's heart is subjected to an electric shock to bring the heart rhythm back to normal. This process is called defibrillation and is the only effective treatment known for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

Causes of sudden cardiac arrest:
SCA is caused when the heart's electrical system fails to generate a heart beat. It could occur in anyone at anytime irrespective of their ages. There are quite a few factors that may cause the heart to stop functioning immediately:

The most common type is the ventricular fibrillation where the ventricles don't beat normally, rather they beat quickly and irregularly. As a result of this, very little blood or no blood will be pumped by the heart to the brain and the vital organs. Drug overdoses or poisoning is another cause, where the drug or the poison potentially blocks the entry of oxygen into the blood stream thus disturbing the heart's rhythm. Eventually, SCA results due to abnormal heart rhythms. The heart's electrical system could fail due to intense physical activity too, especially in those who have other heart related problems. During intense physical activity, the hormone adrenaline is released. In people with other heart related problems, this hormone might trigger a sudden cardiac arrest. Other factors besides the above said include drowning, choking, trauma etc

Importance of Early Defibrillation:

Time is a prime factor when a person is struck by cardiac arrest. Immediate measures have to be taken to save the victims life. Although methods such as providing CPR or calling the emergency number 9-1-1 are vital, they aren't as effective as the defibrillation treatment. Defibrillation has to be carried out at the earliest possible time when cardiac arrest strikes, since chances of the victim surviving drops seven to ten percent every minute without defibrillation treatment.
